Located only 2.2 miles up the beach in the four wheel drive territory of Corolla. Yes, that means you do need a SUV 4 wheel drive or truck to drive in the 4-wheel drive area. That is why they call it the 4-wheel drive area. Some locals only have 2-wheel drive trucks but they have been driving on sand all their lives. There is nothing difficult about it as long as you let some air out of your tires. You can drive on 20 pounds of pressure all week. There is no reason to fill your air all week until you are ready to drive back home.
The local gas station/convenience store, restaurants, Whale Head Club, Corolla Light house and most of the attractions are approximately 3 to 5 miles away. Less than 10 minutes from the Food Lion shopping complex offering unlimited shopping, restaurants, bars, golf and a movie theater.
Rated Best Undiscovered Beach on East Coast with the most spectacular Ocean to Sound views imaginable. True oceanfront living tempts you to enjoy wild mustangs grazing in your own yard, star lit walks along the beaches, waking up to the surf and exploration of the Sound in a relaxing environment.
Best wishes for a Great Outer Banks vacation. We'll be happy to give you a holler if you have any additional questions after looking over the web site or if you are interested in booking.
Sincerely,
Karen & Mike

Lounge under an umbrella or canopy, catch up with friends and family
Sip a beverage and watch the kids play
Throw Frisbees, play bocce ball
Wade, swim, surf and body board
Surf fish
Pick up seashells
Take a relaxing walk along the shore
Spot and photograph wild horses
The ocean temperature stays consistently warm throughout the summer months and into the fall season, so body boarding, surfing, stand up paddle boarding, and ocean kayaking are certainly worth a try during your beach vacation. Many vacationers keep their camera ready for wild horse sightings, and the Carova wild mustangs can often be seen wandering along the oceanfront. Take plenty of pictures, but be sure and keep your distance - these wild horses may look and act docile, but they are feral and can be spooked by approaching humans.
When NC Highway 12 ends, a ramp to the beach begins which runs parallel to the ocean and accesses the communities of Seagull, Penny's Hill, Swan Beach, North Swan Beach and Carova. The 11-mile stretch of shoreline. Sunnybank is right in front of Penny's Hill and one of the first vacation rental homes. Makes it easier than driving down another 8 miles when you need a milk or a case of beer.
By the time NC Highway 12 was completed all the way to Corolla in 1984, the government as well as private investors had already laid claim to much of the undeveloped land, forming refuges, parks and reserves, and a paved road through the area became impossible. A few homes were built, and continue to be developed for beach lovers, but it seems that Carova will always enjoy the distinction of being separate from the paved and popular southern towns of Corolla, Duck and Southern Shores, and worlds away from the traditional vacation.
Location, location, location, Sunnybank is only 4 miles away from several of the most famous historical sites in the Outer Banks. Along with other great attractions.

CENTER FOR WILDLIFE EDUCATION: Located in Historic Corolla Park, the center is an impressive and marvelous 22,000 square foot interpretive center for young and old alike to explore the history and vast diversity of North Carolina's wildlife. One of the key displays is a massive living aquatic ephemera of fish, native to the region, housed in an 8,000 gallon aquarium where families can get up close and personal with a rich variety of finned swimmers. "You have to remember we have a variety of marine eco-systems here. The ocean, the sound and an estuary so it is pretty diverse.

Parking area on your right when you come off the beach from Sunnybank.
NEW COROLLA ADVENTURE PARK: Largest Aerial Adventure Park in the Outer Banks provides an engaging, challenging, and unique physical and mental experience in the Outer Banks that is accessible to many ability levels. Timbuck II is a Corolla shopping destination featuring a wide variety of retail and restaurant experiences. Visitors will wander through a massive complex featuring over 60 venues ranging from art galleries and clothing stores to gift shops, realty companies and a video rental shop.
It is important to remember that the Wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs are, in fact, wild. Do not approach within 50 feet of the horses, or feed them. Wild horses cannot digest fruits and vegetables like domesticated breeds. Close interaction is dangerous to both humans and horses.

We are definitely country people and most of the year live on a hundred acres in PA raising beautiful, loving Portuguese Water Dog Puppies.
We spend more time up in the woods at our pond in PA then at our house.
Why Karen Carroll chose Corolla
We love water and the ocean so when we found Sunnybank on 3 oceanfront acres it was perfect, especially because of all the wild horses. Because we do a Friday to Friday change over day we save 5 or 6 hours coming to our house and leaving to go back home to PA instead of wasting it driving in weekend traffic.

Shelling is fantastic everywhere but between milepost 14 & 15 the kids usually find the most sand dollars. Between milepost 15 & 16 one of the Corolla wild horse herds usually stroll by & umber up onto the deserted dunes to graze. A migrating sea lion was taking a rest on our beach a few days ago. Viewing these beautiful wild creatures in person is like a present from God that never ceases to take ones breath away.
In front of us the dolphins are chasing a large school of fish and playfully jumping up through the water. Last month I was lucky enough to see a whale go by! Look the pelicans are playing follow the leader again! How can those little sandpipers legs move so fast?
After a hard day at the beach swimming, surfing, playing and building sand castles some of us meander back to Sunnybank for a refreshing dip in our large salt water pool.
Because we are one of the few beaches that you can drive right onto the younger adults stay behind to Empty the beer cooler, load up all the kayaks, surf & boogie boards and beach chairs that come with Sunnybank.
Dinner is going to be something very special. No waiting in line, no loud restaurant chatter, putting up with cranky tired children, (mine or anyone else's for that matter), no worries about traffic, how to get there or who will have to be the designated driver coming home. We are already there! My husband was smart enough to hire Chef Wes and Cindy owners of the Red Sky Cafe to serve us and our guests a gourmet meal so we can all relax sooner and be served in style. (My husband's reward will come later.)
What a fantastic evening and dinner. Agreeing this was the best 4 course meal that we have ever had anywhere in the world my guests gave Wes and his staff a long standing ovation. We were all pampered, served with elegance and best of all when Wes left my kitchen was cleaner then when he arrived.
What more could anyone ask for you may wonder! How about no streetlight so you can spend the rest of the evening relaxing outside with cold drinks and gazing into more stars than you have ever seen in your life. Finally with everyone peacefully tired we head to our various bedroom suites to be lulled to sleep by the sounds of the ocean. The magnificent Sunset that mesmerized us earlier this evening has inspired all of us to meet early for coffee down in our oceanfront gazebo. We hope to witness what promises to be a glorious sunrise and the beginning of another marvelous vacation day at SUNNYBANK.
Driving to town is like having your own private driveway; one side is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, guarded by an army of Sandpipers, marching in unison along the water edge. On the other side exists an estuarine nature sanctuary, on the beautiful Currituck Outer Banks in a last truly pristine area, with high sand dunes, beautiful trees and thousands of acres of Island Sanctuary.
Corolla's wild horse herd helps make our 4 wheel drive area the most unique property on the Eastern Seaboard. Away from the hustle and bustle of the in town resort areas our Northern Beaches offer a more peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. Our "gold coast" area of Corolla offers a true oceanfront and sound experience with prestigious landmark sites.
For more information on these beautiful wild Spanish mustangs visit the Old Schoolhouse in Corolla Village museum 7 gift shop. The Corolla Wild Horse Days enlightens the awareness of the treasured wild mustang horses that roam free in the four wheel drive area of the Northern Outer Banks. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund has horse painting for the children at their Schoolhouse Museum every Tuesday, 11AM-2PM, all summer, weather permitting.

Some of the first rental homes including SUNNYBANK you will see within 2 miles of driving off the paved road sit high on a bluff like dune with an absolutely breathtaking atmosphere overlooking the majestic Atlantic Ocean, Currituck Sound, Corolla Lighthouse & the famous Monkey Island & can easily boast of the best views for 100 miles.
Penny's Hill Dune, (the Outer Banks second largest natural dune, second only to Jockey's Ridge) is located behind this spectacular line up of magnificent OBX vacation rentals. Savor the water views from every room of these unique coastal destination homes. Let unsurpassable ocean sunrises and sound sunsets mesmerize you.
If you're in the mood for a beach drive, the Virginia border is a 14-mile jaunt north. Drive carefully; the beach is visited by sea turtles, seals resting on their migration, etc. Dolphin sightings are common; whale sightings are much less common.
You will know when you've made it to the border. We can't get a straight answer as to why, but the border is fenced, and crossing is forbidden! Some kind of dispute between NC and VA? As recently as the 80s, a portable casino plied its trade right here. When the Feds came up the beach on a raid, the locals would hitch up their tractors and drag their rec. hall to the safe side. Those were the days.

My parents had wanted to visit the outer banks of NC for years. Having lived in Durham, my wife and I visited the area many times, and I decided if we ever came back to visit, I wanted to stay on the beach drive area. It is other worldly there. To the east is the Atlantic and to the west is the Sound. Everywhere in between is sugar sand for as far as one can see to the north and south, and in the middle of all this is Sunnybank.
We had sunrises AND sunsets. With the ocean (surfing, kites, boogie boards, beach lounging), pool, games, hot tubs, movie room, pub, and simply taking in the views, we had no shortage of great family fun all day long for the adults and kids alike. There's really no shortage of things to do on-site, yet plenty of space if one wants to find a quiet nook to nap or read. Oh, and the horses...they made a showing every day we were there. On the first day they came right up into the driveway as we stood there, seemingly just to say "Hi."
The house and property itself were all very nice. The architecture of the house is really very impressive. Rooms were all clean, individually themed, and all provided ample space and accommodations for our party. The kitchen was well stocked and there was plenty of fridge (2 fridges between kitchen and lower level) and pantry space for grocery runs. Note that it is a bit of a trek back and forth to town to get groceries over the beach, so meal planning does help. Dorian had just come through, so there was a minor amount of weather damage, but that is to be expected and comes with the territory. No doubt that will get fixed up in due course.
Communication with the owner was always prompt, and she was very helpful with everything we asked.
Overall, our time at Sunnybank really exceeded my expectations. With so many places in the world to see, I rarely want to return to the exact same place more than once...this one may be an exception. So many great memories made there, and everyone left wanting more.

We had a great family time. Anything we could have thought of for any age...baby through grandparents...was available. We have stayed in many different homes in many different areas and have never had a kitchen so well supplied. This owner has definitely thoughtfully supplied for their guests needs. We saw the horses every day, in fact, they sheltered from the rain right in the carport of the house. This was truly an experience we have never had before. My greatest fear was getting stuck in the sand, but it was never a problem. We lowered the tire pressure as advised, and actually only had to shift into 4 wheel drive a few times. I would highly recommend this property to beach lovers and anyone wanting a relaxing vacation.

Unbelievably well prepared home to enjoy a week or longer. 2 dishwashers, 6 burner Viking gas range, multiple refrigerators, countless kitchen utensils, appliances, etc. I would pay these folks to decorate and maintain my home. Just amazing the forethought put into predicting every need. Even on our last day we were discovering warm rain jackets left hanging in the closet in case we needed them. Hose bibs everywhere outside for washing off sand, and even long hose by the carport to wash the saltwater off the vehicles for those worried about rust. Binoculars for viewing horses, kayaks and canoes, oppulent tin ceiling tiles in the gameroom, belted ceiling fans only seen in nice pubs. Wow, absolutely breathtaking the level of thought taken into decorating. Even the dried flower arrangements over the fridge with a swan/bird hidden within was art-worthy in its presentation. The art itself or hangings which had detailed sea maps of ship wrecks and news articles providing local-color of the dunes and the small town history could keep you reading for hours. There were nice leather-bound books, huge supply of movies, chairs and couches everywhere, the largest chaise lounge I've ever seen. Steam shower, multiple easy to use hottubs, simple coded doors for entry and lockup, and on and on. Clearly the owner has spent as much if not more on creature comforts as on location and facility. The elevator was simple to use and saved us a lot of work in unpacking and packing. We waited three years for availability and finally were able to spend Spring break here with kids and their friends. It was worth the wait. We've looked at and rented homes throughout Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia and none were close to the level of detail and value for the money as this home. Hopefully we won't have to wait another 3 years before returning. 5 stars isn't enough.

Wow, what can I say? Sunny Banks was a perfect setting for us and our event. It was fully equipped, decorated beautifully and immaculate. Although I’ve stayed in many beautiful houses in the Outer Banks.. this is a home with character.
Karen has paid very close attention to detail making sure the kitchen was equipped with everything. All types of pots, several coffee makers, electric tea kettle, waffle maker, baking pans, and all types of containers to store leftovers…who does that..!! it even has a professional steamer for fresh seafood.
There was no skimping on dishes or utensils and all the drawers and cabinets are labeled..no guessing where things were. Our event was held at poolside which also has a game room with a full bar. the caterers were able to set up bar and appetizers while the chefs were in the main house cooking.
I say the main house because above the game room is a very large king suite with a full-size bed and two separate decks.
Every bedroom although different has a full bathroom.
Don’t be fooled even the full suite was huge ..it had a large screened porch and a sitting room.
The living room was perfect for watching TV or just looking out towards the beach.
Beyond the enclosed pool area, there are chairs, a table, charcoal grill, and a children’s playground.
This is where we saw most of the horse sitings.
Just beyond that is the beautiful beach.
Dealing with Karen was very easy and straight forward.
Her packet is very informative READ IT!
She also gives you numbers in the event you have a problem like getting stuck in the sand…
This is my favorite part of OBX but you must have the proper vehicle.
I would definitely stay here again….so comfortable
Thank you Karen..
