South of the Tri-Villages of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo, past a sizeable stretch of undeveloped Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Avon, NC, is considered the largest and busiest of the Hatteras Island towns (but remember that’s relative to Hatteras Island, not where you come from). Avon has the only two stoplights on the island (and, still, it’s the busiest . . . isn’t that just perfect!).
Avon was historically known as Kinnakeet, a name that is still often used to refer to the older part of town. Kinnakeet got its first post office in 1873, but 10 years later the postal service renamed it Avon, NC. In 1850 there were 318 residents of Kinnakeet, and around the turn of the century there were about 500, all of them living on the west side of the island. The area of Hatteras Island on which Avon sits was known until modern times as Kinnakeet Banks. Two life-saving stations anchored Kinnakeet Banks – Big Kinnakeet Station south of the village (about where Hatteras Realty is now) and Little Kinnakeet Station north of the village. The early Kinnakeeters, in the early 1800s, cut down large quantities of live oak and cedar trees and used them for building boats or exported them for use in building ships elsewhere. They basically stripped the island clean of trees. Kinnakeet was known for building small schooners, and in the years following the Civil War it was known for its locally built oystering fleet.

This was our first time to Outer Banks and we loved it! Very comfortable home for our vacation. Multiple generations of family together. Everybody commented that this was an amazing vacation and we will look to book a return to Avon next summer. Went to beach, sat on porch or hung around pool most of the time while here and never felt crowded. Pool and hot tub were very well maintained. Enjoyed being able to bring a dog along. House was very clean and had accessories needed for a good stay. Learned after the fact that you need to rent a gas grill so don't forget to do that if you want a grill. Excellent location for Avon, very close to Food Lion and any other items you would need. Appliances in kitchen were nearly new and washer and dryer was suitable. Kitchen furnishings worked well for our needs to cook and we cooked most meals in house. While we were there service contractor came to look at inoperable elevator for luggage, groceries, etc. Hopefully is fixed soon. Lot of stairs to get up to space with luggage and groceries. Older home with expected wear and tear, but a really nice comfortable living space. We thank the Alls family for providing a nice vacation home for our use this past week.

Thank you for allowing us to rent your home for week long, nice mixed family vacation. We had a full house with 4 families in the house, but there was still plenty of room and privacy. The kitchen, family room and eating area had plenty of room for all 4 families at the same time. The bedrooms were spacious and plenty of room for each set of adults. The one room has two pyramid bunk beds that was a little tight and warm, but the kids managed fine in there. The decks (2nd & 3rd floor) were spacious and had plenty of seating to enjoy the ocean view and sounds. The view and the location is amazing! I love that it is not the busy part of the island, but there is still plenty around if you want something to do instead of hanging at the beach or the pool. The beach was wonderful and it was like having our own private beach for a week. I don't give it 5 stars for a couple of reasons. One, the rooms did not have room darkening shades, so it was hard for us and the kids to sleep past 6:00 am, although it wasn't bad to be up early at the beach. Two, there was a door that we could not access or utilize and had no idea it was being worked on. Lastly, the freight lift was not working to lift your luggage and goods from ground level to the 2nd and 3rd floor. So, lugging up four families worth of luggage and food was quite a workout and surprise that first day. Other than that, the home is fantastic, I would definitely rent this home again, the area is perfect, a local grocery store very close by for any needs and the best part, the families loved it. It can be difficult vacationing with a mix of families, but when the home lives up to or even beats expectations that helps a lot. I would recommend this home to families and friends over and over again.

The property was in very good condition with a couple minor exceptions. These were not anything which detracted from the overall pleasure of being on OBX at Avon again.
the upstairs south door would not open and the storm door to the Hot tub deck was sprung.
These as I stated were not a problem for us and we loved the home and location
