Hi, We are the Largents, Larry and Jennifer. We live in White Bear Lake, Minnesota
Land of four seasons, pre-winter, winter, post winter and next winter. Our state bird is the mosquito. =) But all that aside we love it here, we have five children and ten grandchildren. We feel very blessed and they are the breath that fills our souls. The name for our condo was chosen by my granddaughter Gracie who somehow came up with the name in the blink of an eye. My hubby is set to retire in the fall of 2017 and we hope to visit the condo much more especially during the winter.
Jennifer Largent purchased this Condo in 2016
Why Jennifer Largent chose Dare County
We visited the outer banks a few years ago and stayed in Rodanthe. We fell in love with the people, the quietness of the beaches, the unspoiled land of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, the restaurants and shopping and our favorite place to visit, Duck Donuts. (actually my son's and husband's fav but I humor them) We decided in the summer of 2016 to look for a place of our own. We looked and looked and as fate would have it we found the condo. At first glance, it needed alot of work and so we had to use our imagination as to what it could look like. We started shipping some furniture to the condo and then the hurricane hit. We hadn't even visited the condo yet but were uncertain as to what we would learn as the water receded (more than 6 feet of water converged on the condo building). We lost our hvac unit but because the building is built off the ground there was damage but not as much as some homeowners got. Our first visit was about a month after the hurricane hit and when we arrived lots of rebuilding was going on and piles of lost belongings and destroyed property items were along Hwy 12 as we traveled to Hatteras. Our hearts went out to all the people who lost property during hurricane Matthew. The damage was substantial and many had to start completely over. Our van filled to capacity and I mean capacity we have a stow and go there was not a square inch of space left. We brought all the decor and bedding plus some furniture. Our daughters came to help and the change was amazing when we finished. The pictures don't even do it justice, it is a beautiful comfy cozy place and the new sofa sleeper is amazing. No more bars, its like sleeping on a trampoline with a memory foam topper like a cloud. We hope that our guests will love our condo as much as we do, we decorated with you in mind. The kids room is wonderful and I know my grandkids will love it and we hope your kids or grandkids will too. Visit us soon and we hope we will become your favorite vacation
What makes this Condo unique
Traveling across the Herbert Bonner bridge to Hatteras Island you will feel as though you have entered into a time warp, island time. Please be aware it may suck you in and you may never want to leave. We have a darling kids room decorated to keep your kids amused. We have a brand new portable baby crib available. There are single over double bunks which can accommodate adults as well. There is a book shelf filled with kids books and a colorful table with chairs for reading or playing games. Sand toys and an illuminet for crabbing are located in the shark bag in the room. We hope your kids will enjoy the room and feel comfortable. All the bedding is brand new throughout and each bed has a bed bug cover and comforter as well as a bedspread. With the windows open you can hear the ocean waves crashing on the shore as you drift off to sleep. Brand new furniture and furnishings throughout we hope that you will enjoy your stay with us. The best part is the ocean and the sound so close. You can sit on the back deck as the sun sets and enjoy the last wisps of daylight watching the birds, kayakers and paddleboarders. Or walk to the beach which is about 400 steps away down the driveway and watch the sun come up or set. We think it is the most beautiful place on earth. With the refuge so close (several hundred feet to the North once you are on the beach) you can watch some of the 400 migrating birds including Peregrine Falcons or keep an eye out for a Loggerhead turtle winding its way up the beach to lay it's eggs. Please be aware that all turtle nests are protected so please do not disturb. With all the activities available, young and old will find enjoyment on the island or just relax and let the charm fill your soul and replenish your mind.

The ferry to Ocracoake Island is a must do- the ferry is free and if you go around sunset you will get a free sunset cruise. During summer hours it is best to park and walk on the ferry versus driving as you might miss the beautiful sunset. Driving however gives you the opportunity to visit the quaint town of Ocracoake with its beautiful scenery, shopping and restaurants. As of 2020 they also have a passenger ferry which will drop you off in town for a small fee. They also have a trolley system to bring you to local restaurants and shops. A day or evening of great fun.
You can also drive a golf cart around Ocracoke for a small fee or catch the ferry there for another island. IF you visit Ocracoake a must do for a snack or even a meal is visit Eduardo's he has a trailer on the left side as you enter town. The BEST tacos you will ever eat. We love the Shrimp and Mango tacos, try them you won't regret it and very inexpensive.
Also if you catch some fish or pick some up at Harbor House (best seafood and fish to purchase in town) If you don't want to cook it go to Sandbar Grille up the beach on the left in Buxton and ask for the BYOF (Bring your own fish) They will cook it for you any way you want it and give you sides. The potatoes are amazing. They also have an extensive menu but the BYOF is delic. I suggest frying some and having some blackened. Also the chocolate chip pecan pie is fantastic and comes with ice cream and whip cream. *Try Vicky's (owner of Harbor House) crab or shrimp enchiladas they are delicious.
A must do is to stop at the Dancing Turtle for coffee. (down by the ferry on the left) Brian is the owner and he is friendly and courteous and genuinely loves what he does. Get him to talk about KIte Boarding and you have made a friend for life. Some of the best coffee I have ever had. His shop is adorable and quaint and the art by Stephanie Kiker is amazing. If you go up the beach to Nags head, Kill Devils Hills or Kitty Hawk you must stop at Duck Donuts. Made fresh in front of you with your choice of toppings it is by far the best donut you will ever eat. Other things you can do include:
*Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
*Riding horseback on the Beach
*Wild Horses Of Corolla Tours- or grab yourself a 4-wheel drive vehicle for the day and visit this off road area on your own time. For a small weekly fee you can also drive on the beaches here as long as you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Many people visit the beaches of Corolla where the horses are and make a day of it picnicking and enjoying the beautiful unspoiled beaches.
*Deep Sea fishing- Any kind of fishing you want to do is available.
*Sea Turtles - please do not disturb any nests
*Wright Bros Museum
*Plenty of shopping and restaurants along Hwy 12
*Don't forget to visit Duck Donuts - donuts made while you wait. The best you have ever eaten
These are just a few of the things that will make this an unforgettable vacation one that wouldn't be complete without a visit to Duck Donuts where the donuts are made to order as you wait. The sights and sounds of the Outer Banks and Mad Hatteras will stay with you long after your vacation is finished. Come visit us soon! *** Many of our guests have allergies to pets so we are sorry but we do not allow animals of any kind in Mad Hatteras.
We cover all of these and more in our guide to the Outer Banks which we provide in the condo for you to use during your visit. We hope you will visit Mad Hatteras soon and make us your home away from home.
We have under the building parking but it is first come first serve. We are on the second floor so there are two flights of stairs. We also have a private dock for guests and owners. A bbq which uses charcoal, a fish cleaning station and showers under the small building are available for guest use and very helpful in keeping sand to a minimum.
2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 6
Bedroom 1 - 1 queen, *We also have a queen size sofa sleeper in the living room.
Bedroom 2 - 1 double, 1 twin/ single, 1 baby crib, Portable crib is located under the bunks.

The place is just as beautiful as the pictures and the location is fabulous: the beach is right there and the back deck facing the bay was very relaxing and had some great bird watching. Couple of negatives, though. The grill is reminiscent of an old camping grill and is shared with the complex, so it’s not always feasible to use if you’re the 3rd in line for it, which caused us to juggle our dinner plans a couple of times. Also, a mid week text from the owners telling us to keep the doors closed because we’re using too much air conditioning felt unnecessary, particularly when we had been very mindful of that (it’s our cool comfort after all!).

We had a great stay at Mad Hatteras... Enjoyed the deck so much! The couch is extra comfy to be a sleeper sofa and the colorful upgrades were just so interesting and inviting. The keyless entry option was super nice, too, omitting a trip to the realtor office upon arrival and departure. It was perfect for our family of four.

Enjoyed a stay at the end of June. The weather was amazing, the water was clear and refreshing, the sunsets were unbelievable, and the people were all welcoming and friendly. We cooked at home some and dined our some - enjoyed Hatteras Sol, Dinkys, and Breakwater. Already planning a return stay, but this time we will (probably) bring the kids!

We enjoyed our stay! The condo was beautifully decorated with all the amenities. The owners were so helpful each and every time I contacted them. We will definitely be back!

Our stay at Mad Hatteras (Sea Whisper) from 1-8 October 2017 was wonderful! We have been coming to the Outer Banks for decades and finally, we were at Hatteras without kids for a change. We have often stayed in Sea Whisper condos. We really love the close-in location of the sound to view waterfowl and equally love sitting and walking on the beach at all times and even “drowning bait” in the surf. We were struck this year by how little beach is left at lunar high tide. We prefer staying at Sea Whisper because of its relatively isolated location compared to other offerings in Hatteras Village, or for that matter anywhere else on Hatteras Island. As for Mad Hatteras, itself – the condo couldn’t have been better. The owners have clearly turned their home into a project of love. The home is clean and well-appointed. I believe the only thing we found lacking was a pair of scissors for the kitchen. Renting through Home Away, rather than through a local real estate agent was so much easier. The owners were in touch several times before we arrived (particularly appreciated since Hatteras had a close call with Hurricane Maria the week before) and they were responsive to all of our questions. Mad Hatteras will be our first choice for a place to stay on our next trip to the Outer Banks.
